The pygmies in the forest of campo are mainly the Bantu, the Fang and the Mabeya of the south province.
The Bantu pygmies live in the forest at least 10-20 kilometers apart from the Mabaya and the Fang. In each camp of pygmies, you can find 50-65 pygmies living in groups of 2 to 8 hamlets mostly constructed with bamboo and forest woods or mud houses.
Pygmies are mainly traditional hunters, subsistence farmers and few of the elderly are traditional doctors and soothsayers, relying on skills passed down through generations.
The Mabeya are divided in two groups, the first group lives in the forest as pygmies; very close to the other group of Mabeya, who live in their small villages normally hamlets. While the second group of Maybeya do not live in the forest as pygmies, their way of living is very similar.
The Mabeya and the Fang also live in small huts with populations of less than 300 inhabitants per hamlet; in small communities along the public roads between Kribi and Campo.
In most of the hamlets, the population is less than 75 inhabitants. Mabeya are hunters and subsistence farmers, and make little money through trading with members of the community they are living with. A small percentage of the population goes to school, though the government has built primary schools for most of these communities.
In general, the pygmies, Mabeya and the Fang are very poor and backward people in every aspect of development. Most people in the communities are illiterate and most of their children do not like to go to school and depend on subsistence farming and tradition hunting.
